“Even more than the girls, the men really need to learn from it. Because everyone’s focusing on the women, but the problem isn’t the women.” — RihannaOkay it REALLY annoys me every time I see the “Sexual harassment is a crime on the subway too. Don’t be afraid to report it to the police” sign. are you serious? How about “Sexual Harassment is a crime on the subways. Don’t grope people or you’ll go to jail.” Rant over.
Reminds me of an op-ed piece by Deborah Tannen, about the reactions of American women and Greek women to being groped or harassed:
The experiences the Greek women described were similar to those I’d heard from Americans. But there was a difference. Most of the American women — like those recently interviewed in the New York news media — told me they had felt humiliated and helpless and had done or said nothing. Of the 25 stories Greek women told me, only eight concluded with the speaker doing nothing. In the others, she said she had yelled, struck back or both. This might explain the emphasis on “don’t be afraid to report it.”
I get what you’re saying but my problem is that the ads are putting the responsibility (to report it) on victims instead of on perpetrators (to not do it). Basically all “rape prevenetion” is telling women how to avoid being raped- watching their drinks, not walking home alone, etc. Much less effort is put into training men to respect women or basically any other kind of thing that would be preventing “future rapists” instead of “future raped.”
